With modernization deeply rooted in its soul of fast development, Shenzhen has become a synonym of “city in progress”. Now this vital city of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area has unveiled OH Bay and Baywalk in Bao’an District, places of exemplary significance in terms of functionality, space-expansibility and artistic quality. And these places are also open urban parks, the public space that creates urban experience and memory.

The year 2020 sees our past travel experience challenged, boundaries between public and private space redefined, and boundaries between city and nature transitorily broken. We have to revisit how modern science and technology affect the balance and interaction between public environment and individual experience, the interfaces between the virtual and real world, the present and future, and the nature and urban sprawl. The OH Bay art project is themed on the concept of “boundary” in response to its location where the ocean and the land, and the city and nature meet. The commissioned works featuring the elements of “boundary” are displayed throughout the venue. Meanwhile, “Futurescape”, is also a future of the growing Bao’an. The three-layer public space of the Baywalk forms a brand-new city walkway, unrolling in spatial and spiritual dimensions an urban landscape like never seen before. In the context of a dynamic environment, these two public art projects explore and reflect on the relationship among humans, science and technology, ecology and urban space, to build an entrance to multiple future worlds.

The “Three Day Talk”

City history and natural ecology form the context where public art exists, and technological development changes the form of public art and brings public art and the public closer. Public art balances the relationship between people and the surroundings and enriches urban space. While inheriting the history and cultural traditions of the city, public art also presents itself as a new urban cultural landscape. Public art will be discussed at the forum from three dimensions, namely city history, natural ecology, and technological media. Participants will discuss how public art may build an entrance to the future and shape regional physical space and genius loci by sharing their own practices and experience of creation.

Facing public health emergencies, bustle and hassle urban life and stressful work, urban residents are increasingly eager to seek a getaway from the crush of urbanity and embrace nature. At present, to avoid unnecessary traveling, city parks are the top choice for public leisure and recreation. When talking about city parks, we should see them in a broader sense. City parks involve not only leisure industry and landscape design, but also various disciplines such as urban planning, sociology and ecology. What is the relationship between the city and the park? How does the park record the changes in the city and respond to people's needs in different periods? How can we build a city park as an integral part of the city system and provide a sustainable environment? What are the developments of parks? All these will be discussed at the forum.

OH Bay is located at the boundary between the ocean and the land, and between the city and nature, demonstrating the trait of a coastal city. This inspires us to think about the co-development of the city and nature, and to discuss the alternation of time and space boundaries. These resonate with some changes and challenges in 2020. Temporary restrictions on traveling across borders still haven't been lifted in many countries/ regions, while the boundary between what is virtual and what is real has been further blurred by the Internet. These redefined the boundary between public space and private space, and briefly broke the boundary between city and nature. It seems that the present is not far away from the future. "Boundaries" emphasize differences, but are often blurred by dynamics, intersections and changes, resulting in complex and diverse spaces. Participants in the forum will share their studies or design practices focusing on the keyword "boundary", exchange views, ask questions and get inspired by each other in interdisciplinary and cross-domain discussions without assumption or limitation.
